Everyone dreams of winning money on scratch cards, but sometimes, no matter how many goes you have you just can’t find the winning ticket. A shop worker from Swansea stole £16,000 worth of scratch cards from the shop where she worked in a fourteen month period, but didn’t manage win any more than £50. Fifty-year-old Ellen Davies, who worked in a Post Office in Swansea, South Wales, was so bored with her job that she stole several scratch cards every day when no one was looking, winning no more than £50. Her theft wouldn’t have been discovered had the Post Office not received a congratulatory letter from Camelot for their increased sales in scratch cards. Nicholas Evans, the postmaster, was surprised to receive the letter saying how sales of Lotto scratch cards had increased by almost double for the year. When he checked the CCTV footage he realised that Davies was stealing the scratch cards. David Blake, the prosecutor at Swansea Crown Court, stated:
Davies received an 18 month suspended sentence, and 180 hours of community service. |
