An unlucky couple recently missed out on a massive lottery win... because the lottery machine was not working properly. Back in December an elderly couple missed out on a much needed Christmas win of £2,000 after five of their six numbers came up. The couple, who picked their numbers using their birth dates and have used the same numbers for over 14 years, would have picked up their biggest ever win. But a glitch on the computer meant that they and thousands of other players couldn’t buy a ticket. |

Every carer looking after a child must wish for a lottery win, to enable them to give them a good life and stability. For grandparents raising children in Leeds, a lottery win may not be possible, however a lottery GRANT is. The Grandparents Association has been given £179,000 to continue to develop its Leeds Grandparents and Kinship Carers project over the next 3 years. As well as grandparents the charity also provides help for other family members, for example aunts, uncles or siblings helping to raise the child of a relative. |

Every day we hear another heart warming story about how lottery funding is helping people up and down the country. We recently learnt how a one stop service for bereaved people can now offer even more support after being awarded almost £160,000 of lottery funding. The recently launched Hartlepool Bereavement Service will be using the money to open new sites in the town centre of Hartlepool, making it a permanent fixture. The service has been awarded £158,531 by the Big Lottery Fund as part of a scheme to help build stronger communities. |

A syndicate made up of 13 Black Country bus workers were celebrating yesterday after discovering they had won more than £100,000 on the National Lottery. The syndicate matched 5 numbers plus the bonus ball to win the £100k. The syndicate had been playing for only 13 months when one of the syndicate suggested they play the Wednesday draw to increase their chances. The winning ticket in last Wednesday’s Lotto draw was bought at Dhesi mini market in Lodge Lane, West Bromwich, and the winning numbers were 3, 21, 25, 32, 37, 46 and the bonus ball of 15. Now each member is £8,146.85 richer. The group originally thought they only had five numbers but when they double checked they realised they had 5 PLUS the bonus ball. |

For some people, being frugal is a habit of a lifetime. And for some lottery winners some habits of a lifetime just can’t be broken. For single mum of four Maria Murray, the only extravagance she splashed out on was reading glasses and a pair of £170 shoes. These are the only items the mother of four has spent on herself since her Christmas Eve win. Her biggest treat was given to her by her very own children. Maria gave them each a lump sum, and they repaid her by buying her a mini cooper convertible. It’s stories like these that really warm your heart, especially when you hear so much about people arguing over shares on lottery winnings. |

The number one rule of playing the lottery is……..hold on to your ticket. One lucky lottery winner is unwittingly sitting on an unclaimed £135,825 prize. The search is now on to find the owner of the winning ticket, brought in the Edinburgh area, who matched 5 numbers and the bonus ball in the lotto draw on Wednesday, February 25. The rules of lottery are that if the money goes unclaimed after 180 days then you lose the money. So it is imperative that the winner finds their ticket as soon as possible. |

In 1994 when The National Lottery was launched, public opinion was split, was government sponsored gambling a good thing? Or was it encouraging people to gamble with their money? The National Lottery has always attracted controversy with many people thinking it just made gambling all that more accessible. However on the other side of the coin many hail it as a major success story which has enriched the lives of millions of people throughout the UK. By this we mean not just people who have played and won the lottery but also the thousands of projects it has helped throughout the UK. The National lottery has also kept up with the changing times, with the huge growth of the internet market; players are now able to play online. Many put the huge success and continuous growth of the National Lottery down to the wide range of games available, the different draws include The Euro draw and the daily play, and you can even buy lottery tickets on mobile phones. Camelot themselves claim they offer people up and down the country a chance to live the dream. And because the entire operation is run on costs of just 4.5% of sales, this also makes Camelot one of the most efficient major lottery operators in the world.

Recent research shows that the luckiest lottery players live in the South East of England. National Lottery data shows that for the second year running the Medway towns in Kent are number one for Jackpots, followed closely by Ilford and Romford in Essex. The remainder of the top ten is as follows: Sunderland Newcastle Perth Teesside Dartford Kent Hull Bradford These are extremely lucky places to live as there is an average of 19 lottery millionaires in every postcode area. It seems a bit of a coincidence that this National Lottery data coincides with the well known fact that areas to the North of the UK are deemed as poorer than the South. |
