Proceeds from the UK Lottery go towards the Big Lottery Fund which is used to support good causes and community projects across the country. This week there is news of how the Big Lottery Fund is looking to invest in projects totalling around £5million to support struggling communities in this challenging economic climate. The £5million is a portion of the £43million package for the UK that is aimed at helping the vulnerable, young and unemployed. The announcement regarding this latest initiative was made following a consultation where different people were invited to share ideas on how they felt the money should be spent. Jim Mather, the Enterprise Minister, has welcomed this announcement as a “timely investment” of the fund. Dharmendra Kanani, the Scottish Director of the Big Lottery Fund, commented: "We want to help and support people, families and communities to cope, stabilise and recover from the impacts of the economic downturn." Jim Mather went on to say: "It complements the practical, wide ranging measures in our economic recovery programme which is designed to help businesses and families across Scotland." So when you’re picking those lottery numbers, you can feel happy inside that not only are you bettering your own chances of a better life but also those of others less fortunate.
