The search is on to find a lottery jackpot winner. The winning ticket was bought in the Newcastle area and matched five numbers and the Thunderball, on April 9, to scoop the bumper prize.

But the £250,000 jackpot is still unclaimed and lottery players are being strongly urged to check their tickets for the chance to claim the cash.

Lottery protocol dictates that if no one comes forward with the winning ticket before the prize claim deadline at 5.30pm on Monday, October 5, the prize money and interest will be donated to charity.

A National Lottery spokesperson said:

"We're desperate to find this mystery ticket-holder and unite them with their winnings – this amazing prize could really make a difference to somebody's life.

"We're urging everyone to check their old tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding."

Imagine how awful it would be if you later went on to find out you could have been the winner, perhaps cleared your debt, booked a holiday in the sun, had your dream wedding and become debt free. It really is worth checking and asking your family to double check.

Anyone who believes they have the winning ticket for any of the National Lottery draws within the 180-day deadline is asked to call 0845 910 0000
