Is Lottery a Science Or Fate?

One state in America has had an extraordinary lucky streak for players in Maryland, USA. However this has meant even more bad luck for a state budget that has already been hit by the recession. The Maryland lottery revenue has fallen $27 million below projections since last July; this is largely because an alarmingly high number of players won on the big Pick 3 Pick 4 games.

Defying the odds, a series of the same digits was drawn EIGHT times for the game in which the objective is for the player to choose three numbers or four numbers. Often in these games players choose the same lottery numbers largely out of superstition.

When the winning 4 pick series drew the numbers 1-1-1-1 in August approximately 1,400 players won $5,000 each, which amounted to a £7 million payout.  The following month a combined £5.5 million was paid out.

An official for the Maryland Lottery explained ‘we expect a few of those wins a year, not 10 in four months’.

Although no one can guess the psychological reasons players choose numbers, previous winners have spoken about how they had signs or gypsy predictions.

A recent survey has found that more than half of lottery winners put their luck down to superstitions. A third of winners dreamed of their win.
