For some people, being frugal is a habit of a lifetime. And for some lottery winners some habits of a lifetime just can’t be broken. For single mum of four Maria Murray, the only extravagance she splashed out on was reading glasses and a pair of £170 shoes. These are the only items the mother of four has spent on herself since her Christmas Eve win. Her biggest treat was given to her by her very own children. Maria gave them each a lump sum, and they repaid her by buying her a mini cooper convertible. It’s stories like these that really warm your heart, especially when you hear so much about people arguing over shares on lottery winnings. Maria told how she was in shock when they presented her with the lavish gift, Maria was getting ready to go out when her children told her they needed to show her something, when she walked outside she saw a mini-convertible with four love heart balloons attached to it. Maria told how she was so overcome with emotion she burst into tears. Maria won the £1 million jackpot on Christmas eve when she spent her last fiver on scratchcard. Maria was so poor she could not afford presents for her four children, or for her boyfriend. But being rich has not changed her and Maria does not intend to blow all her money, Her only significant purchases on herself have been an £80 pair of Bench designer reading glasses from Asda, a half-price £50 pair of leather boots from River Island and a £40 sale pair of KSwiss trainers. |
